Dr. Juanito “Jun” R. Demetrio, professor at the Capitol University Graduate School, was awarded BEST PRESENTER for Cluster 2 at the recent National Conference on Research and Extension for his paper entitled, “On-Board Charging System for Electric Vehicles (OBoCS4EV).”
The National Conference, held last October 28-29, 2021 via Zoom and presented on Facebook livestream, was sponsored by Offices at the Camarines Norte State College along with the Philippine Association of Extension Program Implementers, Inc. (PAEPI). The conference was unified under the theme, “Humanizing Social Sciences Under the New Normal: The Role of research and Extension.”
The conference presentations were categorized according to two clusters: Cluster 1 for Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences; and Cluster 2 for Natural Sciences and Mathematical Sciences. Dr. Demetrio belonged to the latter group under the category of “Applied Sciences, Mathematical Theories and Modelling.” The abstract of Dr. Demetrio’s paper can be read below, along with pictures of his invention.
Congratulations, Dr. Demetrio! Thank you for bringing honor to Capitol University!
On-Board Charging System for Electric Vehicles (OBoCS4EV) |

Abstract—There are three (3) problems of EV (trike used in this study) that this research and development project, which started in 2017, has addressed: 1) the solar panels could not fully charge the batteries because of the limited space on the surface of the car or vehicle, 2) the electric trike has to be charged for about four (4) to eight (8) hours at the nearest charging station or the conventional electric outlets, and 3) limited range which is about 50 kilometers in this study. The research concluded that the onboard solar charging system following the “Power Bank Concept (PBC)” – coined by the researcher, enables the EV to charge continuously the depleted main batteries while on the road. There is no need to charge the depleted batteries at the nearest charging station or the conventional electrical outlet at home for this is already continuously done on board, replenishing the power that would be consumed. The OBoCS4EV also renders the EV to have unlimited range without the use of charging stations or conventional electrical outlets. This research is addressing the first area of study of EV which is sustainability. The other issues like power, speed, and design would be addressed by future researches. It is desired that the ultimate beneficiaries of this innovation are the ordinary Filipinos in the rural and urban barangays. Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPhil) issued a Patent/Utility Model Certificate to OBoCS4EV on July 29, 2020, with Registration No. 2-2018000633.
